GLP-1 are the newest drugs for use in diabetes mellitus type 2, the most common form of diabetes.   They work by working on the gut-brain axis by a number of ways, but the bottom line is that they aid you in losing weight through less caloric intake on a daily basis.

Semaglutide ( Ozempic and Wegovy) has been found to be effective in weight loss.  Other drugs in the same class include tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and dulaglutide (Trulicity) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). All of these medications were originally approved to treat diabetes but have been found to promote weight loss in obesity. The medications are administered weekly with an injection, usually on the abdominal wall.

This class of medications seem to work very well for weight loss; however the cost can be prohibitive especially for use in obesity. A month's supply of these medications can be over $1000. If you have diabetes, the cost usually is much lower if your insurance ocvers part of the cost.  In addition, due to the current demand, supply is very limited.
